Most people pay too much attention on earning from their blog/website and less on adding value. Unfortunately if you realize this fact later then its difficult to get reader base that value your site content. Priority should be given on providing value for your site visitors.
You see, I started this blog in November 2006, initially I would write posts and it would seem that I am the only one reading but slowly and gradually traffic started to build up, initially from link exchanges with other bloggers and sites (I have seen this has worked the best) and secondly from Search Engines. So be persistent, everything takes time before you see the rewards. Setting up your website or a blog is not different from setting up a business and like any business it takes time to develop.
You can register and create your blog using Blogger easily and start writing about the things you know or are familiar with. Since Blogger is owned by Google, which is what you should aim for first to get the traffic, in my opinion this is given preference in Google when searches are performed. I was able to get a high rank in a few months while my other blogs and sites are not highly ranked in Google.
Once you start to get traffic from Search Engines (I get about 30-50 visitors a day now from Search Engines) or link exchanges with other sites, you would see the benefits. To monetize your blog, start by placing some Ads initially and put more effort on the content/value.
For monetization using Ads, a variety of options are available. The first and easiest to implement is Google Adsense (see the link on the left side). Subscribe to Adsense and place Ads on your site but do not overdo it (see below on how to get Adsense strategies from an expert). Adsense provides contextual Ads that are targeted for your website, which means the Ads are relevant to the content on your website. So if you have a blog about Automotive, by placing Adsense on your blog you will create Auto related Ads that visitors to your site can click and visit those websites. You would earn from each click, although small but can increase as your site visitors increase and by placing the Ads correctly.
Fast track Adsense Strategies learning
There are certain strategies that you can implement to improve Adsense performance on your site or even to start earning with Ads, if you are new. You can achieve this by experimenting with different Ad types and spending a lot of time, perhaps months or a year. There are many sites that would sell you Adsense ready websites for which you would be paying a monthly charge and they provide you content. Believe me those (cookie cutter) condensed sites do not do well on Google and the key is to create your own blog or site with unique and extensive content.
If you are serious about generating income online you can certainly learn about Adsense and other Ads options by doing research and trial/error or you can fast track your learning by buying low cost guides and tutorials. There are hundreds and thousands of these ebooks/guides that people want to sell you but the question is which one to buy?
Well, its a trial and error activity and surely costs money. You can spend time reading long sales letters on these Adsense 'Guru' sites and then decide to purchase their product. Not all are Gurus out there and a huge percentage of those authors simply want to sell you their material which is a recycled version of guide sold over and over by different title. Only a couple of people really know what they are doing and want to provide you with great content that you can actually use to earn. Although I cannot afford to buy too many of these guides, nevertheless it did not stop me from experimenting by researching, studying, reading on forums to select the guides that most people think has some value and works.
Different books give you different ideas on how to use and optimize contextual Ads not just limited to Adsense (see below for other options), each have their positive and negative points. The guide that I have looked at is Joel Comm's Adsense secrets. Joel Comm has been in the industry for a long time, has a forum and a blog which has articles dated back to 2002. This gives you some idea how long a person has been in the field. By registering for Adsense secrets you can get Joel Comm's free 30 page guide, "Blogging with Adsense" which is an excellent read. The actual guide is 199 page loaded with information on earning with Adsense and the good thing is that he shares every step and holds nothing back from the readers.
In fact the ideas and strategies are not limited to Adsense, these can be used for other contextual Ads that other companies are offering. In Adsense secrets guide, Joel Comm shares boatloads of ideas and strategies that anyone with a blog or a website (newcomer or an expert) can implement and improve their Adsense earnings plus this guide is covered by 30 days money back guarantee. Some of the ideas discussed in the ebook are:

Online earning is all about earning from multiple sources, that is multiple streams of income. If one source of your earning slows down or does not work then you have backup sources.
There are other contextual based Ads programs that you can use on your blog/website. You can see these being used on this Blog as well.
Bidvertiser is a Bid per click program. I am seeing good results with Bidvertiser. Its very easy to setup and implement Ads on your site with Bidvertiser. You can register as a publisher, register a site by selecting/clicking "Add a Bidvertiser", select the Ad layout that you want to use, get the Ad code and place it on your website. They say that they will always place highest paying Ads on your site which means when someone click you would get the highest amount for clicks. I have seen getting upto $0.30 for each click but it varies based on the content and Ad.
The good thing I like about Bidvertiser is that the minimum payment is $10 and they pay by Paypal. So when you reach $10 you get paid and its very easy to use. They also have a referral program, so when someone first earns $100, you get $20.
Adbrite is another Ad site similar to Adsense and Bidvertiser with over 19000 sites registered. This means more Ads on your site and higher bidding, giving you an opportunity to earn more $ per click. I have had mixed experience with Adrite. It is not as easy to setup as Adsense or Bidvertiser and takes a little time to understand their site and the procedure to get the Ad code.
My experience was that I have not earned anything from them so far, simply because I tried and was not able to place Ads on my blog. After I registered as a publisher, setup the Ad and got the Ad code, I placed the code on my site and it showed me only two big Ads, which were same every time I or someone else visits my site. The Ads did not change so I contacted Adbrite and they said the Ads need to be approved... huh ? Approval needed, why ? With Adsense and Bidvertiser I simply get the code and after placing it, the Ads are shown on my site immediately. Anyway it took them many days to get back to me for the Ad approval, which I do not know why its needed because all I am doing is creating a campaign to place their Ads on my site and not creating my own Ads... so thats a mystery to me. Perhaps I will give it a try again.
Once you setup the Ad, get it approved (which I think should not be needed or there must some automated way), you can place the Ad code on your site/blog and the Ads would show up.
So to sum up, try Joel Comm's Adsense secrets (has 30 days money back guarantee...read it on the site pls), register with Adsense, Bidvertiser and Adbrite. This would give you more than one Ad earning option and you would not be relying on just one program/company. Learn from the guide on how to place the Ads intelligently tripling or even quadrupling your Adsense earnings (The techniques can also be used for Bidvertiser and Adbrite).
